Which is the easier task? Facilitating Change in oneself or facilitating change in others?
Over the last few weeks, I have been preoccupied with the facilitation of culture change in an organisation.
The beauty and benefit of being a skilled external facilitator, is in the ability to create a workshop space in which you are able to be the proverbial “fly on the wall”, privy to all the real conversations and behaviours that take place in the normal day to day running of the organisation and be judgmental on none. The insights gained allow for heightened awareness of processes that create positive impact and move the organisation forward and the making of timely strategic in situ interventions. It requires that both facilitator and participants be fully present and introspective.
Our local Trini culture challenges all of the above. Our definitions of a “true Trini” include:
You always right – the bush layers
You in everybody business – leaving little opportunity for individual personal reflection and growth
Everything is a joke – unwillingness to confront squarely real issues
You highly critical of everyone and everything from garbage collector to batsman to politician – little time spent acknowledging and/or celebrating the value and good of individuals and situations
No real organisation change can occur until there is a willingness to first of all champion self awareness in individuals and secondly, embrace Kotter’s 8 Step for Leading Change. So am I saying that change is impossible in our existing Trini culture? No, but it does require the use of non-traditional approaches to kick start the system.
At Meredith McSween International we pride ourselves on our facilitation of Time Out opportunities that rapidly create those “Aha!” and “Eureka!” moments in participants as their self awareness is heightened and they discover their untapped knowledge, intuition and engage in expansive thinking Time Out …….. the intentional cessation of an incomplete task. MMI raises the bar on expectations of organisation transformation initiatives
