Time Out …………. It’s a War, Rumours of A War

This morning the lyrics of Bob Marley’s “War” are flittering in and out of my head – not because of my love of the man Bob Nestor Marley, but moreso as I reflected on verbal exchanges that I heard over the last fortnight.

Have you ever sat like a fly on a wall, invisible to all, fully present and observed a discussion, a typical Trini conversation, fraught with the identification of all that is wrong with THE SYSTEM – be it politics, sport, the company, the church – in other words a regular conversation in Trinidad?

Have you heard the passion and belligerence in the voices of the participants?

Have you observed how each interrupts the other’s contribution? Or noticed how each person is so absorbed in their thoughts and what they are going to say next, that they barely hear, let alone listen to what each other is saying?

And as you listened you became aware of a sense of knowing within you, overwhelming you, a sense that no matter how long this discussion continued, nothing would change. The battles would continue to be fought in the mind and the controlled frustration and aggression displayed during the exchanges, would vent themselves elsewhere – in the death tolls on the road, the murder rate, on the sports field, on Carnival Day, in abusive relationships, in offices ….. the dream of lasting peace, world citizenship rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion to be pursued, but never attained.

But I wonder what would happen if one person, just one person in that discussion shifted the issue into a personal passion to make a difference? What if that passion were to replicate itself in bars, living rooms, offices and limes throughout this country? ….. In the words of John Lennon, “You may say I’m a Dreamer …. but I’m not the only one” And as I take my Time Out, I imagine life in the revised edition of Trinidad and Tobago, in which each and everyone is passionately committed to making a positive difference each day.

Time Out …….. the intentional cessation of an incomplete task
